17 May, 2012, the Water Environment Federation Announced that Basundhara Mukherjee,is this year's Vermont winner of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize for her project, "The Effect of Different Flow Rates in a Sand Filter to Purify Water." Basundhara's High School Science Teacher is Curtis Belton. This prize, sponsored by the New England Water Environment Association, qualifies Basundhara to compete in the 2012 U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize National Competition to be held in Boston, MA, between June 14th-16th. Riya Patel South Burlington High School
Riya Patel won the Vermont Slot to the National Runoff. At the National Runoff, she did not place among the top winners of the 50 entrants but "had a great time" and learned a lot.
