Los Angeles, CA

May 14 - 19, 2017

Introduction

To be eligible for ISEF-related prizes, you must be a Vermont student in grades 9-12, submit an individual project or a group project with no more than two members, and follow procedures (outlined below) beyond those necessary for the Vermont Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Fair (VSTEMF).  These procedures ensure that your project is in compliance with National and International regulations if you are sent to represent Vermont at ISEF.  Teachers mentoring ISEF students start here.

VSSMF wins accolades at the 2014 ISEF for its SRC Process:

"We acknowledge the excellent job that you and your students did in adhering to the International Rules and in providing the proper documentation in the initial submission of the project paperwork."  Our process earned the Gold Seal below.

Our Award winning process begins here:

Steps to becoming ISEF Eligible

1) As soon as possible, but BEFORE any research begins, an abbreviated ISEF eligibility packet, consisting of drafts of the Checklist for Adult Sponsor (1), and the Student Checklist (Form 1A) and Research Plan, should be completed and reviewed by the VSSMF-ISEF Scientific Review Board (SRB). The forms and research plan should be scanned into a single electronic file (.pdf format), saved as "XX XX Y_ISEF Packet" where "XX XX" is your first and last name, and "Y" is your gender (F=female, M=male -- some prizes are gender-specific) and the saved file emailed to Curtis Belton by January 15, 2017. If this poses a difficulty, please contact Mr. Belton to work out an acceptable alternative.

He will send your packet for a review by a Vermont ISEF SRC member from Burr & Burton Academy, Castleton State College, Colchester High School, Johnson State College, Norwich University, St Michael's College, U-32, University of Vermont, or Vermont Technical College. This step will enable the VSSMF SRC to provide you with guidance and a list of other forms that will be needed for your final ISEF eligibility packet. Completion of this step by the VSSMF SRC will make you eligible for all ISEF-related prizes except for competition for the trip to compete in ISEF.

2) Using the information provided in the VSSMF SRC review of your project, and all applicable forms from All Forms for 2017 prepare your final ISEF eligibility packet to include, if needed, appropriate reviews by your local Scientific Review Committee, Institutional Review Board, or Institutional Regulatory Board as indicated on all the applicable forms.

3) No later than February 15, 2017 email a .pdf of your final ISEF eligibility packet to Curtis Belton.

4) Mr. Belton will ensure that a member of the VSTEMF SRC will conduct a final review of your packet and within one to two weeks, he will send you an email specifically identifying changes that need to be made to bring it into compliance with ISEF regulations.  If you have followed the recommendations provided by the VSSMF SRC as described in step 1), the changes should be simple.

5) Make the necessary changes and on or before March 15th, confirm with an email to Curtis Belton that you made the changes.  This step will make you eligible for all ISEF-related Prizes, including competition for the trip to compete in ISEF.

6) Bring your corrected, final ISEF eligibility packet with all ORIGINAL signatures to the Vermont Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Fair.  If you are one of the finalists chosen to go to ISEF, your corrected packet will be collected at the awards ceremony, reviewed for compliance and promptly mailed to ISEF.

If you have questions about any of this, including deadlines, contact Curtis Belton  for assistance.
